Know Before You Go

Your Tattoo Journey

Everything you need to know — from preparing for your session to caring for your new tattoo and understanding our shop policies. We want every visit to Truth's Tattoos to be a great experience.

Your new tattoo is a work of art — and proper aftercare is essential to keeping it looking its best. Follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth healing process and vibrant, long-lasting results.

  • Leave the bandage on for 2–4 hours after your session (or as directed by your artist).
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your new tattoo.
  • Gently remove the bandage and wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub or use a cloth towel.
  • Apply a thin layer of the recommended aftercare ointment (such as Aquaphor or a tattoo-specific balm).
  • Wash your tattoo 2–3 times daily with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap.
  • Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer or aftercare balm after each wash.
  • Your tattoo will begin to peel and flake — this is normal. Do NOT pick or scratch at it.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattooed area to avoid irritation.
  • Avoid sleeping directly on your new tattoo when possible.
  • No swimming — avoid pools, hot tubs, lakes, and oceans for at least 2–3 weeks.
  • No direct sunlight — keep your tattoo out of the sun. Once healed, always apply SPF 30+ sunscreen.
  • No soaking — quick showers are fine, but avoid baths and prolonged water exposure.
  • No gym or heavy exercise for the first 48–72 hours to reduce sweat and friction.
  • Do not apply alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to your tattoo.
  • Mild redness, swelling, and tenderness are normal for the first few days.
  • Contact your artist or a medical professional if you experience excessive swelling, pus, or a foul smell.
  • Allergic reactions (persistent rash, hives) should be evaluated by a doctor.
  • If you have any questions during healing, don't hesitate to call the shop at (502) 408-8403.
